Shyam Metalics and Energy has strengthened Odisha’s downstream manufacturing ecosystem with the commencement of commercial production at its aluminium foil facility in Sambalpur, marking another important step in the company’s expansion into higher-value aluminium products. The facility has an installed capacity of 18,000 tonnes per annum and is designed to manufacture premium-grade aluminium foil in thicknesses ranging from 6 to 40 microns. The company is also preparing to bring its much larger Aluminium Flat Rolled Products facility into commercial operation, with a planned capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum and commercial launch targeted for September 2026. Together, the downstream aluminium facilities represent an investment of around ₹800 crore in Sambalpur. The development is important for Odisha because it represents a move from traditional primary metal production toward value-added manufacturing, where companies can potentially generate higher margins and create more specialised industrial employment. Aluminium foil and flat-rolled products are used across packaging, pharmaceuticals, food processing, electrical applications, automotive components and several other industries, meaning the Sambalpur facility could connect Odisha more closely with national and export-oriented manufacturing supply chains. The company has indicated that its downstream strategy is aimed at improving its product mix, expanding market reach and creating additional revenue streams. For the local economy, the significance goes beyond the factory itself. Large manufacturing projects can create demand for transportation, maintenance, engineering, industrial services, packaging, security, hospitality and other ancillary businesses. Sambalpur and western Odisha could therefore see opportunities for MSMEs capable of supplying products and services to the industrial cluster. The project also reflects a wider trend in Odisha, where companies are increasingly looking at downstream processing rather than relying exclusively on extraction or primary production. With Odisha already having a strong metals and minerals ecosystem, the development of value-added manufacturing could become an important route toward increasing the economic value generated within the state. The company’s FRP facility, if commissioned as planned this month, will be the next major milestone for the project.
