NLC INDIA PROPOSES ₹46,000 CRORE POWER INVESTMENT ACROSS DEOGARH AND ANGUL

NLC India has proposed two major thermal-power projects in Odisha with a combined investment of more than ₹46,000 crore, strengthening the state’s position as a major power-generation hub. The larger proposal is a 3,200 MW thermal power plant in Deogarh involving an investment of approximately ₹34,764 crore, while another 1,080 MW project in Angul has an estimated investment of ₹11,604 crore. Together, the projects represent one of the largest components of Odisha’s latest investment-clearance package. The proposals are important because Odisha’s industrial expansion is creating demand for dependable electricity from steel and aluminium plants to data centres, manufacturing facilities and urban infrastructure. Power-intensive digital infrastructure in particular requires stable electricity around the clock, making generation capacity and transmission networks critical factors for future investment decisions. Large power projects also create demand for construction, engineering, transportation, equipment and maintenance services during development and operations. At the same time, thermal generation remains closely connected with environmental and emissions considerations, meaning future projects will operate within a changing energy policy environment. The NLC proposals therefore form part of a wider question about how Odisha balances growing electricity demand with its transition toward renewable and lower-carbon energy sources. For the state’s industrial economy, however, the scale of the proposals demonstrates that power availability remains central to its ambition of becoming a larger manufacturing and digital-infrastructure destination.
