INDIA’S OUTBOUND FDI RISES 23.3% TO $3.8 BILLION AS INDIAN COMPANIES EXPAND ABROAD
Indian companies increased overseas investment sharply in August, with outbound foreign direct investment rising 23.3% year-on-year to approximately $3.8 billion. The increase demonstrates that Indian businesses are becoming increasingly international in their operations, with companies using overseas subsidiaries and joint ventures to access customers, technology, resources and new markets. The investment includes equity commitments, debt and guarantees. Major companies from sectors including energy, telecommunications, manufacturing and technology contributed to the increase. The trend is important because India’s corporate expansion is no longer limited to importing technology or attracting foreign capital into India. Large Indian companies are increasingly becoming international investors themselves. For technology companies, overseas subsidiaries can provide access to foreign customers and specialised talent, while manufacturing and infrastructure companies can establish local operations to execute international projects. The increase also demonstrates the growing financial capacity of Indian corporations. As Indian companies become larger and more competitive, overseas investment is becoming an important part of their long-term strategy.
