ODISHA’S NEW INVESTMENT PIPELINE COULD CREATE A NEW BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM AROUND BHUBANESWAR AND KHURDA
The latest investment approvals could significantly strengthen the economic ecosystem around Bhubaneswar and Khurda as major data-centre, AI, semiconductor, healthcare and advanced-manufacturing projects move into the state’s development pipeline. The proposed investments include a ₹1.05 lakh crore integrated data centre, HCL Technologies’ ₹14,257 crore AI-optimised data centre and several other technology projects. Such developments can create demand for a wide range of supporting businesses, including construction contractors, electrical and mechanical engineering companies, network providers, security services, equipment suppliers, facility-management firms and professional services. A large concentration of technology infrastructure can also encourage skilled workers and specialised companies to establish operations nearby. Bhubaneswar already has an established IT and education ecosystem, giving the region a base from which a larger technology economy could develop. However, the success of the investment cycle will depend on infrastructure execution, power availability, connectivity and the ability to supply skilled manpower. Large announcements do not automatically translate into operational capacity, and projects can take several years to complete. Nevertheless, the scale of the latest approvals suggests that the Bhubaneswar-Khurda region is becoming increasingly relevant to India’s digital-infrastructure expansion. If the projects progress as planned, they could create a new layer of economic activity alongside the region’s existing services, education and government-related sectors.
