ODISHA OPENS NEW NUCLEAR POWER FRONTIER AS NTPC AND ADANI POWER GET FEASIBILITY NOD

Odisha has approved feasibility studies by NTPC and Adani Power for potential nuclear-power locations, introducing a new dimension to the state’s long-term energy strategy. NTPC has selected a site near Deogarh, while Adani Power has received approval to examine locations including Balimela in Malkangiri and Manjore in Angul. The approvals are for feasibility studies and do not represent final sanctions for nuclear plants, but they are significant because nuclear energy requires long planning cycles, detailed technical assessments and extensive regulatory clearances. Odisha already has a large conventional power and industrial base, and the exploration of nuclear generation could eventually add another source of stable electricity to support future industrial demand. Reliable power will become increasingly important if the state’s new data-centre, semiconductor, manufacturing and green-energy proposals are implemented at scale. Nuclear projects can also generate demand for engineering, construction, equipment manufacturing and specialised technical services over extended periods. At the same time, such projects involve complex safety, environmental, land and regulatory considerations before construction can begin. The feasibility process will therefore need to assess technical suitability, water availability, grid connectivity, environmental conditions and other requirements. For Odisha’s business economy, the immediate significance is that nuclear power has entered the state’s investment and energy-planning discussion. The projects remain at an early stage, but the feasibility approvals indicate that companies and government agencies are examining a much broader energy mix to support the state’s future industrial growth.
