SiCSEM’S ₹3,406 CRORE PROJECT ADDS ANOTHER MAJOR SILICON-CARBIDE INVESTMENT TO BHUBANESWAR

SiCSem Private Limited has received approval for a ₹3,406.25 crore silicon-carbide semiconductor project at Info Valley-II near Bhubaneswar, further strengthening Odisha’s emerging position in India’s semiconductor landscape. The project is designed to manufacture silicon-carbide power semiconductor devices such as diodes and MOSFETs and is expected to create around 1,270 jobs. The company has also projected substantial export potential, making the project relevant not only to India’s domestic electronics market but also to global supply chains. Silicon carbide is strategically important because of its ability to operate efficiently under high-temperature and high-voltage conditions, making it suitable for electric vehicles, renewable-energy systems, industrial machinery and charging infrastructure. The project adds another layer to Odisha’s semiconductor strategy because the state is increasingly attracting companies across materials, devices, packaging and testing rather than focusing on a single manufacturing stage. That diversification is important because a complete semiconductor ecosystem requires multiple interconnected capabilities. SiCSem’s research-and-development component could also strengthen Odisha’s technology ecosystem by creating opportunities for specialised engineering and scientific talent. The project’s export orientation is particularly significant because Odisha’s port infrastructure could potentially support the movement of high-value electronic products and materials to international markets. However, the state will need to ensure that supporting infrastructure—including reliable power, water, specialised chemicals, logistics and skilled manpower—is available. If the project and other announced semiconductor facilities progress simultaneously, Bhubaneswar and Cuttack could develop a specialised cluster around power electronics and silicon-carbide technology. Such a cluster would give Odisha a differentiated position rather than forcing it to compete directly with every semiconductor hub in the country.
