LUMINOUS POWER PLANS ₹2,000 CRORE INVESTMENT IN SOLAR AND ENERGY STORAGE, WITH ODISHA AT THE CENTRE

Luminous Power Technologies is planning to invest approximately ₹2,000 crore over five years as it seeks to triple its business through solar manufacturing, batteries and energy-storage solutions, with Odisha playing a major role in the company’s manufacturing strategy. The company is developing a 1.2 GW solar-cell manufacturing plant at Gopalpur and an advanced energy-storage manufacturing facility at Angul. The Gopalpur facility is expected to produce its first batch around May 2027 and will supply solar modules manufactured by the company in Rudrapur. The Angul project adds another important component by focusing on energy storage and next-generation power solutions. Luminous is simultaneously expanding its lithium-ion battery capabilities and has commissioned a 500 MWh battery-assembly line in Baddi. The company’s strategy reflects the changing nature of India’s energy market, where solar generation increasingly needs to be combined with storage, smart inverters and energy-management systems. Residential rooftop solar, small commercial installations and battery-backed power systems are becoming important growth areas as consumers seek lower electricity costs and greater energy independence. Odisha’s role in the strategy is notable because the state is increasingly becoming a manufacturing location for renewable-energy equipment. The combination of solar cells, energy storage and power electronics could create a local clean-energy manufacturing ecosystem and generate demand for suppliers, engineering services and skilled workers. The development also fits with Odisha’s broader industrial transition toward renewable energy and green manufacturing. Luminous has indicated that it aims to combine hardware, software and energy-management capabilities rather than remain purely a battery or inverter manufacturer. Its connected-home platform, for example, provides visibility into solar generation, household consumption, battery use and grid exports. If the planned investment is executed successfully, Odisha could benefit from both direct manufacturing employment and a broader supply-chain effect.
