Odisha’s startup ecosystem received another boost as the Foundation for Technology and Business Incubation (FTBI) at NIT Rourkela organised a two-day workshop focused on startup culture, innovation and opportunities under the GENESIS programme, bringing around 200 students from educational institutions in and around Rourkela into direct interaction with the entrepreneurship ecosystem. While a student workshop may appear smaller than a large investment announcement, such programmes can play an important role in building the long-term pipeline of founders, innovators and technology businesses emerging from Odisha. The state has been trying to strengthen its startup ecosystem through institutions such as Startup Odisha, university incubators, technology parks and entrepreneurship centres, but one of the biggest challenges is developing a culture in which students begin thinking about entrepreneurship before entering the conventional job market. NIT Rourkela has an important role to play because engineering and technology institutions can provide the technical talent needed to build deep-tech, software, manufacturing and engineering startups. The FTBI ecosystem can potentially help students move from ideas to prototypes, business models and eventually investable companies by providing mentoring, incubation and access to industry networks. The workshop is particularly relevant at a time when Indian investors are showing increasing interest in deep-tech, AI, robotics, climate technology, semiconductor-related businesses and advanced manufacturing. Odisha has several natural advantages for building companies in these areas, including engineering talent, mineral resources, industrial clusters and a growing policy focus on technology and innovation. However, startups need more than ideas and talent; they need customers, capital, mentors and an ecosystem capable of helping founders survive the early stages of business development. Programmes connected with established institutions can help bridge some of those gaps. The involvement of students is also significant because many successful technology businesses begin with a problem identified during academic or research work. Rourkela and the broader Sundargarh region have a strong industrial base, meaning students can potentially identify business opportunities linked to steel, mining, manufacturing, industrial automation, logistics, energy and engineering services. These opportunities could produce a different type of startup ecosystem from the consumer-tech-heavy models seen in Bengaluru or Delhi-NCR. Odisha’s startup policy infrastructure is also becoming more visible nationally, with Startup Odisha functioning as the state’s nodal agency for building the startup and innovation ecosystem. The state has introduced financial and institutional support mechanisms, while incubators and educational institutions are increasingly becoming important entry points for young founders. The real measure of success, however, will be how many students eventually convert ideas into companies, how many receive seed funding, and how many businesses manage to scale beyond Odisha. The Rourkela workshop therefore matters not because 200 students attended a programme, but because each such programme expands the potential founder pipeline for the state. Over the next few years, Odisha’s ability to turn its engineering colleges, universities and research institutions into startup engines could determine whether the state develops a nationally recognised technology and innovation ecosystem or remains primarily dependent on traditional industries.
