ODISHA’S INDUSTRIAL APPROVALS APPROACH ₹10 LAKH CRORE SINCE 2024
Odisha has approved industrial projects with a combined proposed investment value approaching ₹10 lakh crore since the current state government assumed office, according to figures reported on September 18. The scale of the approvals illustrates the intensity of the state’s current industrialisation drive, which is aimed at attracting large investments across manufacturing, energy, technology and infrastructure. The figure represents project approvals and proposed investment rather than completed capital expenditure, making implementation the critical next stage. Nevertheless, the volume indicates that Odisha is competing aggressively with other Indian states for large industrial projects at a time when companies are diversifying supply chains and investing in manufacturing capacity. The state’s traditional strengths in minerals, metals, ports and power continue to form the foundation of the industrial strategy, while newer sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, critical minerals and green fuels are increasingly being added to the investment pipeline. The challenge for the state will be converting approvals into operational projects, because the economic benefits of an investment announcement only materialise when construction begins, factories start production and employment is generated. Infrastructure development will be particularly important because large manufacturing projects require dependable power, water, roads, railways and logistics. The recently approved transmission investments and emerging semiconductor clusters are part of that supporting infrastructure. If the various investment pipelines move into execution, Odisha could experience a significant increase in industrial capacity during the coming decade.
